The Harvest Notes for this week are up. Do you remember that last year at this time we were weathering Hurricane Irene and waiting to hear what effect she would have on the farm and our CSA? Contrast with the beautiful weather predicted for this holiday weekend – wow!
The farmers estimate that we will have some of these items (but only a 50% chance of any specific one) in the shares on Thursday: Peppers, Tomatoes, Garlic, Onions, Cilantro, Eggplant, Watermelon, Basil, Summer Squash, Cucumbers, Tomatillos, Sage, Anise hyssop, Carrots.
At the picnic today we discussed how to store basil – or any herbs. A refrigerator is too cold and causes basil to turn black. However, if it is not slimey but “still feels leafy” as one member described it, the basil can be used for cooking. Another suggestion was to make pesto and freeze it in cubes using an ice-cube tray, then store the cubes in a freezer bag. When you want some pasta with pesto sauce or some pesto to drizzle on bread or pizza, just thaw a few cubes to get the quantity you want. Or just let the basil dry and store in a jar or bag for future use.
Don’t forget that the farmers will set up their farmstand in the front entry of the JCC this Thursday. Stock up on extra veggies, or specialty items such as pickles, cheese, or jam, before the holiday weekend!
