Harvest Notes for August 16th

The Harvest Notes are up!  Many thanks to this week’s closing volunteers, who read the instructions and were prepared when cleanup started.   Cleaning and packing everything makes it very easy for the setup volunteers next week.

The farmers said that the melons are turning into a bumper crop this year.  They report that everybody should receive cantaloupe, cucumbers (both green and lemon), leeks, sweet peppers, squash/zucchini, and  tomatoes.   We may get eggplant, hot peppers, and watermelons.  We will also receive at least one herb, and possibly more: basil or mint or summer savory.

Are you puzzled by the lemon cucumbers?  They have that name because of their colour and shape, not because of their taste, which has been described as “more delicately sweet and less acidic than the common green cucumber“.  Slice them into salads or serve them as a juicy snack or dipper for hummus or curry dip.
